Peek started as an idea, then became a research project at the International Centre for Eye Health (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine). Our team includes a TED Fellow, an ex-Google Android partnerships lead, an optical product specialist, software systems architects, clinical researchers and leaders in programme support and training. We focus on solving problems experienced in the most underserved areas of the world and we work directly with local health experts. We listen, observe, innovate, test and then validate before we look to scale up. We always work within local service capacity and help improve effectiveness through local integrated pathways. We partner with clinical services, ministries of health and education, NGOs and the private sector. We are based in London and work all over the world. Our team has been developing smartphone based visual assessment tools since 2011. Our research has developed evidence that covers vision testing, ophthalmic imaging, clinical best practice, situational analysis and screening programmes for eye health services. Peek has been awarded development and implementation grants by the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust and Standard Chartered Bank’s Seeing is Believing initiative.
Dr Andrew Bastawrous, Peek Vision’s Co-Founder and CEO, says:
Several years ago my wife and I, and our young family, moved to Kenya. We hoped our research and the one hundred clinics we ran would contribute something to the millions living with unnecessary sight loss. We soon realised it would barely touch the surface and that for every place we set up a clinic were so many more with people losing their sight and with it their dignity. It is what kept me up at night. Something had to change. Up in my office, on the wall by my computer is a hand-written quote:
“Go to the people. Live with them. Learn from them. Love them. Start with what they know. Build with what they have. But with the best leaders, when the work is done, the task accomplished, the people will say ‘We have done this ourselves.”
At many levels it embodies Peek’s ethos and is a great mantra for both leadership and development. It isn’t written by a modern day hero or superstar, it is in fact 2,500 years old and written by the Chinese Philosopher Lao Tzu. What we are doing is not new, we just live in an era where we have new means to do it. Central to our work is our values: being quality driven, people-focused and acting with integrity. We are a family and we work together, as all families, with our imperfections. However, at our core is our shared vision and mission and we recognise that we can only realise our vision by working with others and for others. So many people have contributed to bring us to where we are now, and now more than ever we have a responsibility to reach those who are silently waiting.
